Synergistic Impact of Amino Acid and SDS on CO 2 Hydrate Formation and Dissociation Kinetics in Quartz Sand in a Brine System
In this study, the synergic impact of two amino acids + SDS at 0.2 wt % on hydrate formation and dissociation kinetics in the presence of brine in quartz sand was investigated in an isochoric sandstone reactor. The hydrate formation study was conducted at an experimental temperature of 274.15 K and a pressure of 4.0 MPa. Generally, the study showed that the mixture of threonine and valine with SDS increases the CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation kinetics compared to the pure amino acids and SDS. Threonine + SDS exhibited a 22% reduction in the induction time and formed more hydrates than the valine + SDS system. Furthermore, threonine + SDS outperformed all of the studied systems for all of the CO2 hydrate formation and stability tested properties, except the gas uptake, where pure threonine exhibited the highest uptake. The findings in this work show that mixing amino acids with SDS leads to promising CO2 hydrate storage capacity and stability in porous media, with a possible reduction of SDS environmental and foaming constraints in industrial applications.
