Efficacy of Chamomile, Mixed Herbal, and Conventional Gum Paint among Adult Patients with Gingivitis – A Randomized Control Trial

Background and Aim: Periodontal disease is highly prevalent among teenagers, adults, and the elderly and continues to pose a significant public health concern. Matricaria chamomilla , derived from its flowers, extracts, and essential oils, is well known for its diverse therapeutic properties in dentistry. The aim of the study is to assess and compare the efficacy of chamomile extract, mixed herbal, and conventional gum paint as astringent in gingival healing by reduction of C-reactive protein (CRP) and plaque control. Materials and Methods: A double-blinded randomized control study was done among the 60 subjects and divided into Group A: Sensoform, Group B: Sensopride, Group C: Chamomile, and Group D: Only scaling. The Landry Gingival Healing Index, Rustogi Modified Navy Plaque Index, and inflammatory markers of CRP was measured at baseline and postintervention. Statistical analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences and Kruskal–Wallis test for gingival healing followed by post hoc test and Paired t -test to check plaque score and CRP were done. Results: The results showed that there is a statistically significant of gingival healing ( P < 0.001), plaque score (22.53 ± 3.31) ( P < 0.001), and C-reactive inflammatory markers ( P < 0.003) among sensoform, sensopride, and chamomile gum paint. The mean reduction of CRP, gingival healing, and plaque score was (0.77 ± 0.26), (1.27 ± 0.46), and (22.53 ± 3.31) higher in chamomile gum paint. Conclusion: The chamomile gum paint acts as a better astringent and shows good improvement in gingival healing can also be used as an alternative for commercially available gum paint.
