A qualitative study of staff perspectives and experiences of the values-based goal setting pathway in a specialist neurorehabilitation unit
Value-based neurorehabilitation goals may encourage patient motivation and positive feedback, as well as improving staff confidence and adherence to processes (Rose & Rendell, 2022). To explore this further, a qualitative design was employed to evaluate staff experiences and perspectives regarding a Values-Based Goal-Setting Pathway (VGSP) within a Specialist Neurorehabilitation Unit (SNRU). Staff with reasonable experience with the VGSP were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews. There were representatives from Occupational Therapy (N=2), Physiotherapy (N=2), Speech and Language Therapy (N=1) and an Assistant Psychologist. Data analysis followed Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis protocol, utilising Saldana’s (2009) coding methods. The results suggested positive impacts for both staff and service users, including improvements within individualised care and collaborative practices. Challenges to effective implementation were also found, including transitional challenges, ineffective communication, and resource limitations. Appropriate developments to improve the VGSP were discussed with the SNRU staff post-evaluation. Overall, the VGSP was well received, with suggestions to improve communication with patients and families, goal setting, and organising goal reviews.
