This article situates mining for the extraction of construction materials within a wider process of metabolic exchange between the Toltec region and other territories in or adjacent to the Zona Metropolitana of Mexico City. We begin by focusing on mining, emphasizing its interrelations with other economic activities in the urbanized region. By observing the relationships between mining, real estate speculation, infrastructure development, and the circuit of valorisation for urban solid waste, we are able to illustrate the social and geographical relationships, as well as the governance schemes, that generate toxicity and facilitate environmental and health degradation in the so-called "Health and Environmental Emergency Regions" (RESA) of the Mezquital Valley.
