Integrating Current Affairs Education into College English Teaching: A Case Study of New College English: Integrated Course Book 5
In the digital era, the transformation of knowledge dissemination has significantly accelerated information flow, yet it has also exposed the limitations of traditional printed textbooks. A single, textbook-centered pedagogy no longer meets the diversified needs of college students in English learning and standardized examinations. Meanwhile, one of the fundamental missions of higher education is to cultivate students' civic consciousness and social responsibility. This study explores how current-affairs education can be systematically integrated into college English teaching. Through the combination of language instruction, social cognition, and critical-thinking training, the paper proposes a pedagogical framework that enhances both linguistic competence and intellectual engagement. By analyzing classroom cases and discussing their cognitive and affective outcomes, it illustrates how real-world topics bridge the gap between textbook knowledge and students' lived experience, achieving the multidimensional goal of language + literacy + values.
