Leveraging Serial Verb Constructions for Sequential Processing in English–Chinese Sight Interpreting

Sight interpreting (SI) from English to Chinese faces significant cognitive load due to syntactic discrepancies. Traditional reordering strategies increase processing lag and cognitive burden. This paper proposes a sequential processing strategy that leverages inherent features of Chinese syntax—serial verb constructions (连动结构)—to convert English hypotactic structures into linear, paratactic Chinese expressions. Case analysis demonstrates this method reduces cognitive load, improves real-time fluency, and ensures pragmatic appropriateness, offering a cognitively efficient alternative to conventional reordering.

Abstract

Sight interpreting (SI) from English to Chinese faces significant cognitive load due to syntactic discrepancies. Traditional reordering strategies increase processing lag and cognitive burden. This paper proposes a sequential processing strategy that leverages inherent features of Chinese syntax—serial verb constructions (连动结构)—to convert English hypotactic structures into linear, paratactic Chinese expressions. Case analysis demonstrates this method reduces cognitive load, improves real-time fluency, and ensures pragmatic appropriateness, offering a cognitively efficient alternative to conventional reordering.
