Energy Absorption in Bamboo Mimicking Nanocomposite Laminates

ABSTRACT The energy absorption of bamboo mimicking flax fibre reinforced epoxy composite laminates is measured under impact conditions. Core–shell rubber nanoparticles are introduced and homogeneously distributed in the matrix for toughening purposes. Impact tests reveal that the absorbed energy and impact damage depend on the laminate lay‐up, i.e. the local fibre concentration. The core–shell rubber nanoparticles greatly increase the absorbed impact energy while reducing the area of damage.
