Mid-Infrared Resonant Laser Swelling of Polymethylmethacrylate for Production of Biocompatible Phase Micro-Optic Elements

Resonant near-surface absorption of mid-infrared (3.2–3.5 μm) laser pulses in undoped polymethylmethacrylate leads to formation of smooth convex tracks via laser swelling in pre-ablation mode accompanied by 5–10 times wider laser-melted material redistribution zone with a reduced refractive index. Optical characteristics of inscribed structures and absence of Raman-detected chemical changes make them perspective for precise manufacturing of dye-free biocompatible polymer phase elements.

Abstract

Resonant near-surface absorption of mid-infrared (3.2–3.5 μm) laser pulses in undoped polymethylmethacrylate leads to formation of smooth convex tracks via laser swelling in pre-ablation mode accompanied by 5–10 times wider laser-melted material redistribution zone with a reduced refractive index. Optical characteristics of inscribed structures and absence of Raman-detected chemical changes make them perspective for precise manufacturing of dye-free biocompatible polymer phase elements.
