High Heterogeneity of Several Liver Histology Parameters in Patients With Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease Demonstrated by Biopsies From 7 Segments
The incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is rising and affects more than one-third of the global population today.1 MASLD is associated with a lower life expectancy and is expected to be a considerable burden for health care systems in the future.2,3 Patients present with varying stages of disease with different prognostic implications, including steatosis alone, and the more active form metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), where steatosis is accompanied by hepatocellular inflammation and ballooning, potentially leading to fibrosis and ultimately cirrhosis.
