Advanced Multi-Mode Microscopy Enabled by Meta-Optics
High-clarity and precision imaging of biological and non-biological samples is essential for numerous applications in healthcare and research. However, these samples' small size and low contrast present persistent challenges. Additionally, ultra-compact, multi-modal imaging systems with enhanced performance are of significant interest for overcoming these limitations. We present a highly efficient, ultra-compact imaging system that integrates multi-modal imaging capabilities, leveraging the state-of-the-art optical principles of metasurfaces to achieve superior imaging performance. By leveraging the phase gradient metasurfaces, our designed optics combine bright-field imaging and a spiral configuration with a topological charge of +1 for edge enhancement, providing exceptional imaging performance. A tunable varifocal feature has been introduced to enhance imaging control, enabling precise focus adjustment with ease. An all-dielectric metasurface composed of subwavelength resonators is employed to impart the desired multiplexed phase modulation to achieve high efficiency. Considering the practical device demonstration, the imaging of the lens is critically analyzed through different aberration and imaging analyses. Thus, featuring a diverse, multifunctional design, easy fabrication, and a simple design approach, the proposed system's state-of-the-art optical capabilities open up exciting opportunities in healthcare and education.
