Radiographic Aids in Dental Implantology – A Review

Radiographic imaging is crucial in dental implantology for preoperative evaluation, precise surgery, and postoperative monitoring. While traditional methods such as Orthopantomogram (OPG) and intraoral periapical radiographs (IOPA) offer initial assessments, cone-beam computed tomography has emerged as the gold standard because of its three-dimensional precision. Complex cases that call for soft-tissue examination benefit from the use of advanced modalities such as computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Real-time navigation systems, 3D-printed surgical guides, and guided implant surgery are examples of radiographic aids that improve implant placement accuracy and lower complications. For the purpose of tracking osseointegration and identifying implant-related issues such as peri-implantitis and implant failure, postoperative imaging is essential. Future developments in low-dose imaging, augmented reality-based planning, and artificial intelligence (AI) will enhance digital workflows, radiation safety, and diagnostic accuracy. Implant success rates and patient outcomes will be significantly improved as technology advances by incorporating AI-assisted diagnostics, virtual planning, and real-time imaging.
