The Effect of Video-Based Empathy Training on Empathy Skills and Holistic Nursing Competence Level in Nurses: Randomized Controlled Study

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of video-based empathy training given to nurses on their empathy skills and holistic nursing competence levels. It was assumed that empathy and a holistic approach would strengthen the relationship between healthcare professionals and patients, thereby promoting positive changes in the quality of healthcare services. Material and Methods: This study was conducted as a randomized controlled experimental research. The sample size was determined using power analysis, and a total of 82 nurses (41 in the control group and 41 in the experimental group) were included. Data were collected between November 2023 and February 2024 using the Descriptive Characteristics Information Form, the Empathy Scale, and the Holistic Nursing Competence Scale. No intervention was applied to the control group, whereas the experimental group received video-based empathy training. Nurses in the experimental group were instructed to watch the training video twice, with one-week intervals. Empathy and holistic nursing competence scales were administered to both groups before and after the training. Results: The mean Empathy Scale score of the experimental group increased significantly from the pretest (51.07±8.15) to the posttest (60.85±4.40), while no significant change was observed in the control group (pretest 49.36±11.16; posttest 48.95±10.44) (p<0.05). Similarly, the Holistic Nursing Competence Scale scores of the experimental group increased significantly (pretest 5.19±1.43; posttest 6.22±0.74), whereas the control group showed no meaningful change (p<0.05). Conclusion: The study demonstrated that video-based empathy training positively improved nurses' empathy skills and holistic nursing competence levels. Therefore, incorporating such training into nursing education and clinical practice is recommended to enhance the quality of nursing care.
