Hidradenitis suppurativa and bone health: cracks beneath the surface? Comment on ‘Frailty in hidradenitis suppurativa: a case–control study’

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), increasingly recognized as a multisystem inflammatory condition, is associated with heightened frailty and may also confer an underappreciated vulnerability to impaired bone health through chronic inflammation and related comorbidities. Emerging evidence, including reduced bone mineral density and degraded microarchitecture in HS, suggests a plausible link to osteopenia, osteoporosis and fracture risk, warranting greater clinical vigilance. To optimize long-term outcomes, integrating bone health and frailty assessments into HS care and pursuing robust longitudinal research will be essential to clarify mechanisms, refine risk stratification and inform targeted prevention strategies.
