Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and the Discourse on Gender Equality in Indian Society: A Qualitative Inquiry
This paper explores the discourse of gender equality through the ideological lens of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of India’s foremost freedom fighters and the 'Iron Man of India. While Patel is often remembered for his political unification of India, his vision extended to the social reconstruction of the nation, where gender justice formed a silent but critical layer. Using a qualitative methodology based on thematic analysis of Patel’s speeches, writings, and secondary accounts, this study examines how his principles of equality, justice, and fairness can be reimagined as a framework for addressing gender disparities. Special emphasis is placed on the dual nature of gender atrocities against both men and women situating Patel’s democratic values in the context of both historical practices and modern Indian society. The findings suggest that Patel’s philosophy resonates deeply with contemporary debates on gender rights, calling for a balanced and inclusive model of social justice.
