Investigation of mechanical shock and vibration hazards in Indian stone miners operating EMVs

This study investigates the ISO 2631-1 and ISO 2631-5 standards to determine the effects of whole-body vibration on Indian stone miners. The research can significantly help predict health risks for Earth-Moving Vehicle (EMV) drivers. At the operator–seat interface of EMV operators, a riaxial accelerometer installed in a rubber seat pad is utilized for measuring the Whole-Body Vibration (WBV). The investigation revealed that the vertical axis experienced the strongest vibrations, with a mean (range) frequency-weighted r.m.s. acceleration of 1.53 m/s2 (0.74–2.57 m/s2) and a crest factor greater than 9 in all three axes, which indicated a high level of mechanical shock content. With 66% of measurements over the health advisory caution zone, the vertical axis vibration values are 8.5 and 17 m/s1.75. These levels, when coupled with an aging workforce in the stone mining industry, can be harmful and lead to worse health issues.Practitioner summary Stone industry workers are routinely subjected to whole-body vibration while operating EMV vehicles, which poses a serious threat to musculoskeletal disorders, particularly the low back. To encourage a safe work environment, it is essential to assess vibration exposure. This assessment may also help guide initiatives to reduce operator vibration exposure.
