Sustainable Nano-Particle Reinforced Polyvinyl Acetate (PVAc) Adhesives: Morphological and Thermal Characterization Toward Enhanced D3 Durability

Water-resistant polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) adhesives, which are frequently used in the wood sector and categorised as D3 durable, are better at withstanding heat and water than standard PVAc thermoplastic products. Several methods are used in traditionally synthesised adhesives to increase durability, such as the use of inorganic salts, such aluminium chloride, or the use of a particular metal by in-situ emulsion polymerisation, aiming to increase durability against heat and water. By employing an emulsion polymerisation approach and a particular monomer mix that uses vinyl acetate as a homopolymer and gum arabic as an additive, we hope to increase the durability of polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) to the level of durability D3 in compliance with EN204-205. The morphology was investigated by TEM microscopy and FTIR analysis, thermogravimetric analysis was carried out investigating the heat resistance characteristics. The results demonstrateed high water and heat resistance complies the EN204-205 specifications.
