AN EVALUATION STUDY ON THE STATUS OF AGRICULTURAL TRACTORS IN EGYPT

This study aims to evaluate availability and status of agricultural tractors in Egypt. The cultivated and cropped area, Number of tractors and its brand and power, tractors density, and available power of tractors per unit area were identified across all governments. The study relied on the official data published in the bulletins of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics in the Arab Republic of Egypt, in addition to the economic bulletins issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Economic Affairs Sector for the year 2023. The results showed that the total number of tractors was 132,289, falling under approximately twenty-five different brands. 36.46% of the total number of tractors belonged to the “Universal” brand. The average value of tractor density was 18.30 tractors per thousand hectares of cropped area, and it was 31.11 tractors per thousand hectares of cultivated area which considered low compared to some developed countries. 51.52% of tractors fell within the power range from greater than 50 to 70 hp (>37.5 to 52.22 kW), indicating that tractors with medium power are most used for a wide range of agricultural operations. The average value of tractors’ power per hectare of cultivated and cropped area was 1.454 kW/ha and 0.862 kW/ha, respectively. Finally, this paper presents several recommendations to improve the status of tractors in Egypt to assist in achieving sustainable agricultural development.
