THE NEGATIVE INTERROGATIVE IN ANCIENT EGYPTIAN LANGUAGE
ENGLISH The article explores the "negative/denial interrogative" form in Middle Egyptian, Late Egyptian, and Coptic, which is a rhetorical form attested in Egyptian and Coptic literary texts and the Scripture. Rhetorical questions are emphatic assertions or negations that come in the disguise of a question, when a rhetorical question is formulated in the negative it is in fact an emphatic affirmative assertion. Depending on the notation, the negative interrogative formula can be read as either a statement or a question. The negative interrogative formula was formed by means of the interrogative particles as is and negative particles, essentially bn. It was formed in various ways in Coptic; among others by using the negation form of the First Perfect, or by the use of interrogative particles, such as ⲙⲏ and ⲉⲓⲉ, and negative particles as ⲁⲛ.
