Comparison the Effect of Salvia officinalis Leaves Alcoholic Extract in some Physiological Parameters with Metformin and Clomiphene Citrate in Mice Oocytes with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder of fertile females, there are various reports about the effects of Salvia officinalis in regulating sex hormons and hypoglycemic, this study aimed to evaluate the physiological changes of alcoholic extract of Salvia officinalis leaves in female mice in which Polycystic Ovary Syndrome was induced. Thirty Wistar albino female mice were divided into five groups: control, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (letrozole, 1mg/kg/day, for 21 days) group, Salvia officinalis leaves (200mg/kg/day), metformin(200mg/kg/day), and Clomid (20mg/kg/day) groups, for 28 days after induction of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome by letrozole, there was letrozole-induced Polycystic Ovary Syndrome characterized by the presence of cystic follicles in the ovaries, elevated testosterone, glucose, insulin, Malondialdehyde (MDA), and Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) levels, also, decreased estrogen and progesterone levels. Biochemical parameters were improved by Salvia officinalis extract, testosterone, insulin, glucose, cholesterol, insulin resistance, MDA, and TNF decreased, while estrogen, Superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Catalase (CAT) Enzyme increased. Salvia officinalis can be helpful in treating reproductive and metabolic disorders associated with PCOS via its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-diabetic properties and estrogenic action, its effect was similar to metformin and Clomid.
