Nurses’ Mindset about the Utilization of Artificial Intelligence in the Care of Geriatric Patients with Cancer

Background: Cancer remains one of the most significant health challenges affectinggeriatric patients, highlighting the urgent need to utilize advanced technologies. Artificialintelligence (AI) involves using computer systems to support and improve decisionmaking, pattern recognition, and problem-solving, thereby complementing humanintelligence. The mindset of nurses about the use of AI when caring for geriatric patientswith cancer is crucial to providing efficient, high-quality care. Aim: Explore nurses'mindset about the utilization of artificial intelligence in the care of geriatric patients withcancer. Setting: The study was conducted at Al-Qabbari Specialist Hospital inAlexandria, Egypt. Subjects: The present study included 140 nurses caring for geriatricpatients with cancer and working in the previously mentioned setting for at least sixmonths. Tools: Two tools were employed. Nurses’ Socio-demographic and OccupationalData Structured Interview Schedule and Nurses’ Mindset about the Utilization ofArtificial Intelligence in the Care of Geriatric Patients with Cancer Structured InterviewSchedule. Results: Results of the present study found that 65% of nurses have highperspectives, 84.3% have positive beliefs, and 82.9% have positive attitudes about theutilization of AI in the care of geriatric patients with cancer. However, only 40.7% hadgood knowledge. Despite this, 80% do not use AI, and 95% have no training in AI.Nurses' attitudes were strongly correlated with beliefs (r = 0.790) and knowledge (r =0.398). AI use and training are linked to more positive perspectives, beliefs, and attitudes.Higher AI knowledge is significantly associated with widowed nurses and those withpostgraduate education. Conclusion: The mindset of nurses about the use of AI whencaring for geriatric patients with cancer is positive, with positive perspectives, beliefs, and attitudes. However, the nurses' AI knowledge was very different. Some nurses had agood idea of how AI could be used in clinical practice, while others only knew the basics. This could make it harder to safely and effectively use AI in patient care.Recommendations: Organizing and collaborating on practical workshops for nursescaring for geriatric patients with cancer on using AI in the diagnosis, treatment, and careof geriatric patients.
