Developing Nursing Practice Standards for Patients Undergoing Endourological Procedures.

Background: Urological diseases are highly prevalent disorders that requireendoscopic interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality. Endourological procedures(EP) are recommended according to guidelines to deal with closed manipulation of theurinary tract. Urological nursing practice requires the ef ective use of the nursingprocess in responding to the patients with urologic health related issues and for patientswith EP peri operatively, to meet urologic health care needs and prevent post-operativecomplications. Objective: To develop nursing practice standards for patientsundergoing EP. Settings: The study was conducted out in the In patient Uro surgicaldepartments at Alexandria Main University Hospital and Karmoze workers Hospital, Egypt. Subjects: Subjects of the present study were assigned into two groups as follows;Group one: included of a total of 55 expert members in nursing and medical educationand practice, who have experience in field of the study. Group Two: consisted of allnurses (their number is around 40), who are assigned to provide direct care for patientsundergoing EP at the above mentioned settings. Tools: three tools were used. Tool one: “Nursing Standardized Competencies Opinionnaire for Patients Undergoing EP tool". Tool two: “Nursing Practice Standards for Patients Undergoing EP: an ObservationalChecklist". Tool three: “Nurses Knowledge of Nursing Practice Standards for PatientsUndergoing EP:a Questionnaire Sheet". Results: Almost all head nurses & surgeonsand educators form nursing and medical field agreed about all the five nursingcompetencies. The majority of the studied nurses had all over ‘fair” practice level scoreon both averages of observations, regarding all the five nursing competencies. Themajority of the studied nurses showed all over ‘good” knowledge level score regardingperioperative nursing interventions. Conclusion: the majority of the studied nursesdemonstrated all over ‘fair” practice level score on observations, and an allover ‘good”knowledge level score for perioperative nursing interventions for patients undergoingEP. Recommendations: The developed standards of basic nursing interventions formanagement of patients undergoing EP should be available in the EPU and generalizedto all urological surgeries and other specific areas .
