Effect of intrinsic muscle training on balance in Latin Dancers: A randomised control trial
BackgroundLatin dancers are prone to foot and balance-related issues due to repetitive foot movements and medial longitudinal arch changes. Weakness in intrinsic foot muscles can contribute to postural instability, affecting dance performance. This study examines the effect of intrinsic muscle training on balance in Latin dancers by analyzing physiological changes in the Berg Balance Scale (BBS) and Foot Posture Index (FPI).ObjectiveTo evaluate the impact of intrinsic foot muscle training on static and dynamic balance in Latin dancers.MethodsThis randomized control trial included 84 female Latin dancers aged 18–25 years. Participants were divided into an experimental group (intrinsic muscle training) and a control group (regular warm-up). The experimental group underwent intrinsic muscle exercises twice daily for four weeks. BBS and FPI scores were recorded pre- and post-intervention.ResultsThe experimental group showed a significant improvement in BBS scores (pre: 50 ± 2.6, post: 56; p < 0.0001) and FPI scores (pre: 2.33 ± 3.37, post: 1 ± 1.90; p < 0.0001). The control group demonstrated minimal improvement in both measures.ConclusionIntrinsic muscle training significantly enhances balance and foot posture in Latin dancers. Incorporating such training into dance programs can improve performance and reduce injury risks. Future research should explore long-term benefits across different dance forms.Key Word: Latin Dancers, intrinsic muscle training, balance, foot posture, sports injury.
