Preliminary Investigation of Bovine Tuberculosis in Cattle

Bovine tuberculosis, a hazardous chronic infectious illness that affects cattle as well as other domesticated species and wildlife, is caused by the acid-fast bacterium Mycobacterium bovis. The current objective of investigation was to determine Mycobacterium bovis incidence. Two hundred dairy cattle aged 1–5 years from Cairo Governorate were examined using the single intradermal cervical tuberculin test (SICTT). Tissue samples from organs of tuberculin-positive cases were cultured on two different types of media (Middlebrook and Lowenstein Jenssen medium) and examined under the microscope, using Ziehl-Neelsen stain. Thirteen animals 6.5% had good reactions, whereas 187 animals 93.5% had negative results. After slaughter, tissue samples were harvested for bacteriological culture and post-mortem tests were carried out. Of the animals investigated, confirmed bovine tuberculosis in 61.5% of sampled animals by culture method. To avoid the spread of M. bovis infection among animals and, thus, prevent harm to humans, our study highlighted the significance of effective surveillance, the advancement of current control methods, and the development of more successful programs.
