Rice Husk Liquid Smoke Larvicide for Dengue Vector Control
Abstract Aim: Dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) is an endemic disease that impacts on Indonesia’s health, society, and economy. The majority of attempts to disrupt the life cycle of Aedes aegypti involve chemical larvicides, which have detrimental effects on the ecosystem. Thus, searching for more ecologically friendly natural larvicide substitutes is imperative. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of rice husk liquid smoke larvicide (RHLSL), a natural larvicide, in preventing the dengue vector A. aegypti . Methods: A posttest-only control group design was employed in the study, involving 525 third-instar A. aegypti larvae. RHLSL was utilized at doses of 0.1%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, and 2.5%. Observations were carried out at the 0.5 th , 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , 4 th , 6 th , 8 th , 12 th , and 24 th h. Two approaches were used to analyze data: Probit analysis and Mann–Whitney U -test. The average larval mortality rate in each treatment was compared using the Mann–Whitney U -test. Lethal Concentration 50 and lethal time 50 were determined via probit analysis. Results: The most significant percentage of deaths was observed at the 2.5% RHLSL concentration. Based on the probit analysis results, the LC 50 value was 1.151%, and the LT 50 value was 22.732 h. Conclusion: The results demonstrated the RHLSL’s effectiveness against the dengue vector as a larvicide.
