Impacts of National and Local Chapters of 500 Women Scientists
Abstract: 500 Women Scientists was founded shortly after the 2016 election with the mission “to serve society by making science open, inclusive, and accessible and transform society by fighting racism, patriarchy, and oppressive societal norms.” Since then, 500 Women Scientists has created far-reaching programs like Fellowship for the Future, Gage, and the Inclusive Meeting Guide. These programs align with national published recommendations and have been impactful across the globe. The national organization encouraged the creation of localized Pods all over the world, including two Pods within the Greater Philadelphia region. The Philly Pod was formed in February of 2017 and became a welcome presence at local science events increasing the visibility of women scientists in the area. The Phoenixville Pod was formed in the Chester County region in 2019 and has demonstrated remarkable adaptability and resilience while publishing podcasts and books. The future success of 500 Women Scientists depends on both volunteer engagement and institutional backing; without these, progress toward equity in science will be limited.
