Exploring the Biomedical Potential of Cichorium intybus Root Polysaccharides: Isolation and Analysis
ABSTRACT Polysaccharides derived from Cichorium intybus (chicory) roots, particularly inulin, represent a promising class of natural biomaterials with significant pharmaceutical potential. This study focuses on the isolation, characterization, and assessment of the bioactivity of these polysaccharides for potential applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, and other biomedical fields. Using a combination of aqueous extraction, ethanol precipitation, and purification, we successfully isolated the polysaccharide fraction from chicory root. The isolated polysaccharides were characterized using spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR to determine their structural and other properties. Preliminary pharmaceutical evaluations revealed notable prebiotic, anti‐inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound‐healing activities. These findings position Cichorium intybus root polysaccharides as promising candidates for future biomaterial applications in drug delivery systems, regenerative medicine, and as natural therapeutics in pharmaceutical formulations.
