Magnetic field strategies in organ preservation

Organ preservation is a crucial determinant of transplant success and patient outcomes. However, conventional techniques have limitations in prolonging preservation time without compromising organ function. This review systematically evaluates the applications of magnetic fields (MFs), a highly penetrative physical modality, in preserving various tissues and organs, and their synergistic use with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for enhanced preservation and rewarming efficacy. Emerging evidence indicates that the static magnetic field (SMF) and alternating magnetic field (AMF) of specific parameters can mitigate several injury factors during organ preservation at low temperatures, including free radical accumulation, ice crystal formation, and cellular membrane damage. By synthesizing the current knowledge, this review aims to highlight the potential of MF-assisted organ preservation strategies and their translational prospects in transplantation.
