Numerical study of the influence of the rupture of burst discs on shock wave propagation in hydrogen-oxygen detonation tube
Hydrogen-oxygen detonation tube has a wide range of applications. However, the role of burst discs is often oversimplified, overlooking the detrimental effects of their non-ideal rupture on shock wave propagation. To investigate the impact of burst disc rupture on shock wave propagation from hydrogen explosion in a hydrogen-oxygen detonation tube, a numerical study was conducted using a modified Drewry rupture model (using empirical coefficient k 1 ) and overset mesh methods. Rupture angle critically influences wave system evolution and pressure characteristics. Larger angles enhance venting, weakening the upstream reflected shock wave, its baroclinic vortices, and localized reactions. This attenuates the core coupling mechanisms sustaining high-pressure regions, progressively lowering the second pressure peak relative to the first. Larger angles also promote jet development and shock wave morphological evolution while mitigating non-ideal rupture effects, reducing discrepancies between simulated/experimental and theoretical Mach numbers.Simulations reveal that non-ideal rupture synergizes with expansion tube geometry to govern complex wave system formation. In the expansion section, the abrupt area increase attenuates the incident shock, generating upstream rarefaction waves. Subsequent supersonic flow from second interfaces creates high-velocity gradients, inducing second shock waves. The model accurately captured non-instantaneous rupture flow fields, demonstrating the model's effectiveness as a tool for hydrogen safety simulation.
