Cucurbit[8]uril-Derived Porous Organic Polymer Adsorbents for Highly Efficient, Recyclable Removal of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals

A series of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8])-linked porous organic polymers (POPs) has been synthesized. The CB[8] rings are attached with multiple sulfonatopropoxy groups to endow the POPs with good water-solubility. Upon acidification, the POPs become insoluble. One of the POPs (CB8POP-aa′) is used as a porous polymer adsorbent to remove endocrine disrupting chemicals, including estrone, 17β-estradiol, estriol, 17α-ethinylestradiol, and bisphenol A, from water. Batch adsorption experiments show that CB8POP-aa′ can adsorb 99% of the EDCs from their saturated solution, while flow-through adsorption experiments reveal that the concentration of the EDCs can be reduced to the levels (ng/L) lower than required standards. Moreover, the POP adsorbent is highly stable and, after five cycles, does not display observable reduction of adsorption efficiency for both batch and flow-through adsorption performances. The high removal capacity of CB8POP-aa′ has been attributed to the inclusion of the CB[8] rings for the EDCs.
