610 Countering federal actions in the united states eliminating racial equity data and research: resistance and innovation by US philanthropy through funding anti racist research and addressing the assault on immigrant health

Abstract PTH 5: Exclusion and Discrimination, B307 (FCSH), September 4, 2025, 15:15 - 16:09 In just eight months, the Trump administration has implemented an anti-science, ideologically driven strategy to eliminate key federal level data sets addressing racial and immigrant health, canceled billions of dollars of equity- oriented research and eliminated thousands of key government positions and infrastructure intended to protect the health and wellbeing of marginalized populations. While the order of magnitude of the federal cuts cannot be replaced by philanthropic funding, a coalition of health and science funders have been formed to fund archiving of data, develop alternative and fact based data systems at the state and regional level to support advocacy and governmental accountability, and fund antiracist and community connected research. The coalition includes most all of the major philanthropies in the United States with projected funding for this year approaching $1billion. Leading the data and research component is the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the largest philanthropy in the United States solely focused on health. This presentation will detail examples of the strategic focus and impacts of the funding including: Countering federal health disinformation through developing parallel and fact- based information systems developed at regional and municipal levels,Providing partial funding for antiracist and health equity grants that were eliminated including special support for young scholars of color,Funding a network of trusted communicators to disseminate fact-based health equity information and data on the impact of federal cuts in specific high-risk communitiesFunding organizations supporting immigrant health and their legal protection
