363 Migrant health in Latin America: challenges and perspectives
Abstract WKS 16: Migrant Health in Latin America: challenges and perspectives,?B203 (FCSH), September 4, 2025, 13:30 - 14:30 Rationales and Purpose The landscape of migration in Latin-America (LA) changed in the past decade, with increased numbers of persons moving within the region in search of safety and a better life. South-South migration in LA is unique in several ways, including prolonged periods of transit and mixed flows of economic migrants and displaced persons. The structural drivers of migration, as well as the conditions during transit, have a negative impact on migrants’ health. Although health policies for migrants in most LA countries are relatively benign, health systems have limited economic, organisational and governance capacities. Additionally, some countries are in the process of passing restrictive legislation, which could pose a significant threat to migrants’ access to healthcare. This workshop will introduce the current migration and health landscape in LA, with a focus on the impact of structural determinants on migrants’ health and access to healthcare, as well as the response of health and social systems to migrants’ needs. Methods/Process of Workshop Firstly, experts will introduce the current situation of migration, health, and health systems in LA. A discussion will follow on the environmental and social challenges of migration and migrant health in LA, as well as the research gaps in the region and worldwide.
