Intra-pol proviral open region of HTLV-1 controls the transcription from both long terminal repeats
The IPOR sequence appears to regulate the transcription from both LTRs, suppressing the 5'LTR but activating the 3'LTR. Recruitment of Eomes to the IPOR is likely to influence the expression of Tax and HBZ. Since both viral genes are involved in diverse mechanisms for viral replication, cellular proliferation, and immune regulation, the IPOR may play a role in fine-tuning the modes of viral persistence in vivo.
