Ayurveda education in the digital era: Opportunities, challenges, and roadmap for integration
ABSTRACT: Ayurveda has traditionally been taught through oral transmission, memorization of Sanskrit texts, and experiential apprenticeship. With globalization and rapid advancements in educational technologies, Ayurveda education is entering a transformative phase. Digital platforms, blended pedagogical models, simulation and Virtual Reality (VR) tools, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and open-access research repositories now allow Ayurveda to transcend geographical boundaries and gain global recognition. This trajectory mirrors broader shifts in healthcare education, where digital learning, simulation-based training, and tele-education have become mainstream, endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and supported by over 1100 simulation centers worldwide. However, these opportunities are counterbalanced by challenges, including risks of oversimplification, inadequate clinical exposure, the digital divide, lack of regulation, and ethical concerns in data governance. Drawing from Ayurvedic classics, contemporary literature, and institutional initiatives, this article reviews the opportunities and challenges of Ayurveda education in the digital era and proposes a roadmap for sustainable integration. The roadmap emphasizes blended pedagogy, investment in digital infrastructure, policy and governance frameworks, evidence-based research, and ethical inclusivity. With thoughtful implementation, Ayurveda can emerge as a globally relevant, evidence-informed, and digitally modern system of health education without losing its authenticity.
