Traditional knowledge databases as data intermediaries in relation to the emerging data governance principles

ABSTRACT: With the growing importance of Traditional Knowledge (TK) to address diverse global needs across several sectors, documentation of the knowledge, skills, practices, etc., gains immense significance. Several countries are developing TK information systems – digital libraries, repositories, and archives – to preserve and protect their TK heritage. Further, these information systems are being viewed as data intermediaries for protecting and promoting the TK. In parallel, data governance principles are emerging, considering data as a high-value tangible wealth. These databases are now being conceptualized as “data intermediaries” – entities that mediate between data providers and users under emerging global data governance norms. The article discusses several aspects of data governance principles relating to TK information systems.
