Liberté, Égalité, Laïcité: How Public Schools Separated Church and State
ABSTRACT: The development of free, compulsory, and secular public schools during the late nineteenth century was a decisive moment for both France and the United States. Public schools became not only permanent features of these modernizing nations, but also the center of debates about the separation of church and state. What emerged from these debates in the classroom would later extend well beyond. This history is often forgotten, yet is crucial to understanding contemporary debates about laïcité in France and religious freedom in the United States.
