Beckett's En attendant Godot and Millet's L'attente : Reading the Work, the Frame, and Beyond

ABSTRACT: Many paintings have been cited as intertexts of Samuel Beckett's En attendant Godot . This article proposes to study the intertextual relationship between the play and Jean-François Millet's painting L'attente , which depicts a scene from the Apocrypha : an old couple, Anna and Tobit, waiting for their son who is absent like Godot in the play. Waiting and absent presence are the common themes of the two works. A semiotic analysis and a deconstructive reading of space in both the painting and the play will show that the character who is offstage or outside the frame is central to each.
