Samuel Gorton, Roger Williams, and Secular American History

Abstract Samuel Gorton (1593–1677) was a pioneer of religious liberty in colonial America but has remained an obscure figure because he rejected both a future millennium and the possibility of secular progress. His contemporary Roger Williams’s apocalyptically oriented pleas for spiritual freedom have proved easier to adapt to modern sensibilities.
