Early congenital syphilis and femur agenesis: a case study
Early congenital syphilis (PCS) is recognized as a preventable but frequent condition with the potential for intrauterine and perinatal multisystemic severity. The aim of this study is to present a case report of early CS with an uncommon occurrence of femoral agenesis and to emphasize the importance of prenatal care, diagnosis, treatment and mother–infant follow-up. Male newborn (NB), born at term by vaginal delivery, APGAR 9/9, Appropriate for Gestational Age (AGA), hospitalized with one day of life in a neonatal intermediate care unit for the treatment of PCS in a hospital maternal and child care facility that cares for patients through the Unified Health System (SUS) in the state of Pará. On physical examination of the NB, a short limb was observed, and radiographic imaging revealed aplasia of the femur isolated from other alterations. The prevalence of PCS results in failure in the health system, resulting in tragic outcomes, among which we question the rare occurrence of femoral aplasia whose functional, social and psychological prognoses are potentially tragic and for which extensive discussion and investigations in the literature are still lacking.
