Azheke on the cloud—Exploring the aesthetic value of traditional settlements: a case study

Traditional settlements serve as rural cultural heritage in China, especially those minority communities located in areas with complex topography, harsh climatic conditions, and limited natural resources. The spatial arrangements of these communities not only preserve traditional cultural elements but also reflect significant aspects of traditional Chinese aesthetics. However, in the context of the rapid advancement of modern aesthetics, the traditional aesthetic values of settlements have increasingly been neglected. Consequently, the primary issue we aim to address is how to re-examine the aesthetic principles embedded in traditional settlement spaces and integrate them into contemporary urban development. Focusing on the traditional Hani village of Azheke, this study utilizes field investigations, aesthetic theory, and spatial analysis to explore the aesthetic features of traditional settlement spaces through three lenses: natural beauty, social beauty, and artistic beauty. The aesthetic characteristics are illustrated using a multiscale approach that includes macro, meso, and micro perspectives. This study constructs a theoretical framework for settlement aesthetics and illustrates its practical application through an in-depth analysis of Azheke Village. By delineating the conceptual and expressive dimensions of settlement aesthetics, this research offers a replicable model for future studies in this field.
