Multi-mode electromagnetic suspension test bench for system characterization, model parameterization and levitation tests

The development of high-speed magnetic levitation (Maglev) systems holds significant challenges, particularly as increasing speeds enhance the need of understanding static and dynamic system behavior. While various models, simulations and control design tools support development, they often lack comprehensive validation and experimental data, limiting their reliability or applicability, as few test tracks and only one commercial high-speed Maglev line exist. Test benches are often limited to specific system aspects or lack transparency regarding their setup, capabilities, and measurement data, which restricts their usability to the originating research group and highlights the need for a versatile and well-documented experimental platform. Therefore, we propose a multi-mode test bench on single-magnet level to support the entire development process of Maglev systems. We provide insightful documentation of its assembly, the measurement processes and results useful for other researchers. The test bench allows detailed system characterization, model parameterization and tests for experimental validation of levitation capabilities under various excitation scenarios. The knowledge obtained on single-magnet level was successfully applied to more complex vehicles with multiple interacting systems. The results highlight the test bench as a crucial link between theoretical modeling and practical implementation, advancing the reliability and efficiency of Maglev system design for future high-speed transportation. • Detailed assembly presentation of multi-mode EMS test bench on single-magnet level . • Measurements procedures and results for static and dynamic magnet features. • Application of measurements in system identification and model parameterization. • Demonstration of hardware-based tests for validation and vehicle-level integration.
