Naringin Infused Hydrogel for Optimal Wound Healing Applications—An In Vitro Study

ABSTRACT This study focused on the development of bioactive hydrogel beads composed of sodium alginate and Isabgol ( Plantago ovata ) for potential wound healing applications enriched with the flavonoid naringin. To understand the therapeutic relevance of naringin, key wound‐healing‐related target genes were identified using a network pharmacology strategy, followed by molecular docking of the top 10 hub genes to evaluate binding affinity and mechanism of action. Structural integrity and thermal stability of the formulated beads were assessed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) to characterize functional groups and morphological features. The swelling capacity, degradation profile, and drug release kinetics of the beads were analyzed to evaluate their responsiveness and sustained release capabilities. Antioxidant activity was confirmed using the 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, which demonstrated enhanced bioactivity in naringin‐loaded beads. Additionally, cytocompatibility studies using the 3‐(4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl)‐2,5‐diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay on NIH3T3 fibroblast cells revealed the wound healing potential of a polyurethane‐based system. Overall, these findings support the potential of the hydrogel platform as a multifunctional bioactive wound dressing.
