Shining Bright Again: Defying the Odds in Traumatic Retinal Detachment
A 50-year-old male presented with no light perception in his left eye following blunt trauma. Vitreous hemorrhage was noted obscuring fundus evaluation. With clinical diagnosis of retinal detachment of recent trauma with nonrecordable visual evoked potential (VEP), patient underwent vitreoretinal surgery. At 6 months of follow-up, intraocular pressure was 14 mmHg, aphakic vision correction improved to 6/9, N6 with attached retina. This case underscores that even in eyes with severe trauma and nonrecordable VEP, surgical intervention should be considered when other factors such as ultrasound findings, patient age, and timing are favorable.
