Unusual Anatomical Variation of the Inferior Thyroid Vein: A Case Report
BACKGROUND: Anatomical variations in thyroid venous drainage are rare but clinically significant, as they can pose challenges during neck surgeries. A thorough understanding of such variations is essential for precise surgical planning and enhancing patient safety. This report aims to detail a unique anatomical variation in the inferior thyroid vein observed during cadaveric dissection. METHODS: A 40-year-old male cadaver was meticulously dissected during an anatomy course. Detailed measurements of the inferior thyroid veins and their anatomical relationships were documented. RESULTS: Both the right and left inferior thyroid veins measured 1.8 cm in length, converging to form a common trunk measuring 2.5 cm, which subsequently drained into the left brachiocephalic vein. The surrounding anatomical structures appeared normal, with no additional abnormalities noted. CONCLUSION: This rare configuration of the inferior thyroid veins emphasizes the importance of detailed anatomical knowledge and the value of preoperative imaging in identifying potential vascular variations. Such insights are critical to mitigating risks during neck surgeries.
