A Yeast Transcription Factor Atlas: Implications for Novel Crop Regulatory Networks
The inherent complexity of transcriptional regulation has long hindered a comprehensive understanding of how transcription factors (TFs) achieve spatiotemporal precision in gene expression. In their recent study, Mahendrawada et al. reveal novel mechanisms underlying TF-mediated genome-wide regulation in unicellular organisms, challenging two key paradigms: that most TFs function as context-dependent dual regulators (activators or repressors), and that TF binding sites are poorly predictive of functional gene regulation. By integrating this genome-wide TF activity profiling with emerging concepts such as phase-separated condensates, we propose principles of dynamic transcriptional control that may offer a framework applicable to plants.
