Constructing ordinary representations of finite groups via extension

Efficient practical methods are described for the construction of ordinary representations of a finite group G via the extension of existing representations defined on a proper subgroup of G . Using an implementation of these methods within the Magma Computer Algebra System, minimal-degree faithful ordinary representations of several of the large sporadic simple groups (including the Baby Monster) were explicitly constructed for the first time.

Abstract

Efficient practical methods are described for the construction of ordinary representations of a finite group G via the extension of existing representations defined on a proper subgroup of G . Using an implementation of these methods within the Magma Computer Algebra System, minimal-degree faithful ordinary representations of several of the large sporadic simple groups (including the Baby Monster) were explicitly constructed for the first time.
