A Skin‐Changing Grass: Annual Bluegrass, Which Is Not so Annual
Annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) is an annual plant, one of the most notorious weeds and a dangerous invasive plant. It has also invaded Antarctica, where the growing season is very short and cold.Such harsh conditions are restrictive for plant growth. We looked for the species' adaptations to thrive under Antarctic conditions and performed laboratory simulations of the Antarctic conditions to follow the species' ability to extend its lifespan beyond one growing season, which may enable successful persistence. In the end it turned out, that annual bluegrass from around the world is able to turn perennial under harsh conditions.
