Bilateral laparoscopic ovariectomy in Dexter heifers under general anaesthesia: A description of two cases

Abstract This article presents two clinical cases of bilateral laparoscopic ovariectomy in Dexter heifers used as leisure animals to eliminate problematic sexual behaviour. Initial standing flank laparoscopy in one heifer failed due to anatomical limitations. A second approach under general anaesthesia in dorsal recumbency, with transrectal manipulation of the uterus and ovaries, proved successful in both animals. The recumbent laparoscopic method ensured minimal invasiveness, rapid recovery and high owner satisfaction. The authors highlight the importance of surgical planning, assistant coordination and tissue inspection to ensure effective removal. Laparoscopic ovariectomy is concluded to be a safe, welfare‐oriented option for managing reproductive behaviour in small cattle breeds.
