A new chapter for pathogen surveillance in Africa
WHO, Africa Centres for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI; Berlin, Germany) announced in May, 2025, that they were expanding their Health Security Partnership to Strengthen Disease Surveillance and Epidemic Intelligence in Africa, officially launched in July 2023, into a second, 3-year phase. In this phase, Rwanda will join existing partner countries, The Gambia, Mali, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, and Tunisia. The partners said they are advancing “collaborative surveillance”, linking the signal-spotting and threat assessment of epidemic intelligence with the laboratory and genomic capacity that turns those signals into actionable evidence.
