Electric Machine Design: An Attempt to Apply Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is spreading at huge pace and is a breakthrough in many aspects of our life. Its ability to solve problems creates a paradox: from now on persons can solve problems that they do not understand, relying on AI. Electric machine design is a very specialized topic that requires skills and specific experience. The paper aims at assessing the actual level of AI when tackling electric machine design. A case study is investigated. A Surface-mounted Permanent Magnet (SPM) synchronous motor has been designed by a human and by artificial intelligence (AI) to assess the AI's level and capability. Finite Elements Method Magnetics (FEMM) simulations of both machines are carried out and their performance are compared.
