Front Kick Analysis in Kickboxing Athletes Using IMUs: a Pilot Study

The front kick is one of the most used kicks and its efficiency highly depends on the kicking technique. Thus, a deep knowledge of its kinematics is crucial for athletes’ evaluation and training strategies’ optimization. The aim of this study is to provide an objective assessment of the front kick using a wearable inertial motion capture system (Xsens Awinda). Biomechanical parameters were automatically computed for each kick during a non-fatiguing Technical Execution Assessment and during a Frequency Speed of Kick Test (FSKT<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">mult</inf>) with fatiguing conditions. For the FSKT<inf xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">mult</inf>, the Kick Decrement Index (KDI) and a novel Parameter Decrement Index (PDI) were computed to evaluate the performance change along different sets: while the former, already employed in previous studies, refers only to the number of kicks performed within the sets, the latter adds a more detailed analysis based on the kinematic parameters of the motor gesture. Results showed that the Xsens system is a valid method for a comprehensive analysis of the front kick, that can offer quantitative insight also in real-world settings. In addition, the PDI provides a more specific biomechanical evaluation of performance compared to the KDI, thus helping the development of optimized and personalized training programs in combat sports.
